Open Day of Good Practice for Tourism in Gjirokastër

On Monday, in the middle of November, the Open Day of Good Practice activity took place with the participation of civil society and business representatives, but also by the Municipal Council and leaders of the Municipality of Gjirokastra.

The selected good practice is “Economy that grows from tourism”, as an outcome from local performance diagnostics

In communication with the attendees, but also online viewers through social platforms, the ALTAX expert, who contributed to the preparation of the material, conveyed the reality of the focus of the Municipality and its resources coordinated with the investments being made in the museum areas of the city.

The promotion and development of sustainable tourism seems to be one of the main priorities of the Gjirokastër Municipality. Throughout this year, the municipality, in cooperation with the government and other donors, has undertaken the implementation of interventions for the revival of cultural heritage objects, the reconceptualization of museums and the organization of a rich calendar of activities in the service of tourism development.

However, tourism in its comprehensive entirety has been analyzed by our experts verifying also as an especially important commitment of waste management, rehabilitation of the lighting network and many other public works that aim to increase the duration of the tourist season by promoting winter tourism with a full package and half fares. However, the length of stay of visitors who come to the city in the City Hall is seen as an approach that will be beneficial to the local economy, but also to the residents of Gjirokastra, which is decreasing.

The development of tourism in the region is seen as an opportunity to create new jobs and will serve to curb immigration. Despite the negative impacts that the emigration of the population, especially of young people, has had, rural areas have well-preserved traditions and customs, which constitutes a potential for the development of tourism in this space.
