Study on profit margins in the Albanian economy and challenges to sustainable development
A detailed analysis of profit margins in the Albanian economy for the 2021–2024 period has highlighted the highest-performing sectors and the key challenges that hinder sustainable economic development. The study emphasizes the need for a more strategic orientation of economic policies toward productive and technological sectors, which have the potential to enhance competitiveness and generate long-term added value.
📈 High-Performing Sectors
The analysis reveals that professional services, information technology, and the real estate sector have shown high profit margins, significantly contributing to economic growth and exports. The tech industry, in particular, has demonstrated considerable capacity to attract foreign investment and develop new markets abroad.
Other sectors, such as healthcare and tourism, also have a positive impact on added value creation, enhancing standards and the quality of services provided. With the right investments, these areas could become key pillars for a more diversified and independent economy, moving away from traditional low-profit sectors.
⚠️ Challenges and underperforming sectors
Despite the strong performance of certain sectors, the analysis identifies significant difficulties in areas such as trade and telecommunications, which exhibit low profit margins and contribute less to economic growth. Additionally, the lack of modern infrastructure and productive capacities in sectors with high added-value potential remains a serious barrier.
Another major challenge is the shortage of a skilled workforce. High-potential sectors like industrial production and technology require specialized skills that are currently lacking in the labor market. For this reason, investments in education and training programs are critical to ensure sustainable growth and boost competitiveness in international markets.
🔍 Strategic direction of the economy
Experts suggest that Albania’s economy should focus more on manufacturing and technological services to ensure more sustainable growth. Agrobusiness and industrial processing can become important economic drivers through incentive policies and targeted investments in logistics and infrastructure development.
At the same time, promoting innovation and startups in the tech field will help create high-value jobs and increase the export of technological services. This requires a developed ecosystem that supports scientific research, business incubators, and fiscal incentives for new companies in strategic sectors.
✅ Necessary measures for a sustainable economy
To overcome current challenges and build a competitive economy, the report recommends:
- Investments in infrastructure – Modernizing transport and energy networks to support production and tech sectors.
- Support for education and vocational training – Preparing a skilled workforce for high-value sectors.
- Subsidies and fiscal incentives – For key sectors such as industrial production, technology, and professional services.
- Development of an innovation ecosystem – Creating tech hubs and incubators for startups.
- Improved conditions for small and medium enterprises – Supporting innovation and development of competitive products in international markets.
If these measures are successfully implemented, Albania has the potential to build a stronger and more sustainable economy, creating better conditions for the development of sectors that generate added value and ensuring prosperity for its citizens
