A new analysis of the developments in the Balance of Payments for the years 2024\u20132025<\/strong><\/a> highlights a clear deformation of the Albanian economy, where there is strong macroeconomic stability, but there are no real changes in the way the economy produces and grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the document, Albania has achieved a significant improvement in its external position. The current account deficit has narrowed significantly, from -610 million euros to only -178 million euros, while foreign exchange reserves have increased by over 1.13 billion euros. These indicators give a clear signal of financial stability and a better ability to withstand external shocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But after these positive developments, the analysis highlights that the improvement does not come from increased production or exports, but mainly from external and non-productive factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the center of this stability is tourism, which has reached record levels. With total inflows of 5.724 billion euros and a net contribution of 2.685 billion euros, this sector has been the main factor that has kept the external balance in balance. However, the document emphasizes that its impact is concentrated in a few months of the year, with almost half of the income being realized only in the third quarter. This seasonality makes the economy vulnerable to any external shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remittances also continue to play an important role, which reached 1.119 billion euros, with an annual increase of 7.1%. They help stabilize consumption and the exchange rate, but do not create new production capacities and do not affect the reduction of dependence on imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, the trade deficit remains deep and essentially unchanged. In 2025, it reached -5.956 billion euros, confirming that the Albanian economy continues to consume more than it produces. Although the overall balance improves, its structure remains fragile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another key finding relates to Foreign Direct Investment. Although their level remains high, around 1.6 billion euros, they are increasingly oriented towards real estate, which accounts for over a third of new flows. This shows that foreign capital is not being channeled towards productive or exporting sectors, limiting its impact on the long-term development of the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document defines this situation as a \u201cclosed cycle\u201d of the economy, where tourism and remittances fuel consumption, which increases imports, deepening the trade deficit, while investments are oriented towards non-productive sectors such as construction and property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this context, experts warn that the current model carries several structural risks: high dependence on seasonal tourism, long-term uncertainty of remittances and lack of investment in sectors that create exports and sustainable jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this reason, the document proposes a clear change in the orientation of economic policies. The emphasis is placed on redirecting investments towards value-added industry and agriculture, diversifying tourism beyond the summer season, and creating mechanisms that encourage the use of remittances for productive investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final message is clear. Albania does not lack financial flows from abroad, but there is a lack of their strategic use. The main challenge for the coming years, beyond increasing foreign exchange inflows, is their transformation into production, exports, and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
